Alexander Peloquin's "Lord of Life" Mass Premieres in St. Patrick Cathedral, NYC October 5, 1980

It was a pleasant October weekend in 1980 when the Sound Dynamics Associates' recording crew set out from SE Massachusetts for New York City. The occasion was a recording session of the premiere on Sunday morning, October 5th of Alexander Peloquin's "Lord of Life Liturgy" as commissioned by the Archdiocese of New York to celebrate Life Sunday of that year. We arrived at St. Patrick's Cathedral mid afternoon on October 4th to set up for a dress rehearsal which was to begin early evening. Very helpful cathedral staff directed us to the so called "bridal waiting room" situated off to the left of the

sanctuary making the proximity of equipment to the "action" very easy.  The room was ideal in that it was small and had plenty of sound absorption materials to facilitate stereo speaker monitoring. Peloquin, who for many years directed choral music at Boston College and at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, RI was one of the first Catholic Church Music composers to meld Latin and English in new music based on Gregorian Chant themes, following the suggestions as set out by Vatican II in the late 1960's. Having already composed several Music Liturgies for the Mass up to this time, the Archdiocese New York commissioned him to compose a musical

liturgy for Life Sunday of October 5th 1980. Having recorded several premiers of his works in Providence with great success, Dr. Peloquin contracted Sound Dynamics Associates to be with him and his Chorale on that day.  The end result of all this special planning and traveling was a recording of incredible clarity capturing the chorus, harp, bass, brass ensemble (NYC brass musicians) and organ in the vast acoustics of the Cathedral.

Alexander Peloquin passed on in early 1997 leaving a legacy of Catholic Church Music that was rhythmic, enthusiastic, sensitive and demanding. Sound Dynamics Associates is proud of the work done with Dr. Peloquin including the NYC recordings which include this "Lord of Life Liturgy" at St. Patrick's. A CD of this recording is available from us on special request. Cardinal Cooke was not in attendance at the NYC premier as he was in Rome on short call.  He did attend the Providence premier of "The Lord of Life" one month later. We recorded that performance too.
